Garden Totem
Workshop
is full

grallWe will be creating a rustic garden totem “a spirit being, sacred object, or a symbol that serves as an emblem of a group.” In this spirit we will be using our own experiences to create a unique piece of art. The cedar plank will be provided for each student to mount their five unique totem tiles on. Designs for the glass tiles can be animals, plants, or any other abstract design. We will be using vitrograph, glass enamels, and powders to create our own designs on each tile. They will be kiln fused overnight on Saturday. Then assembled onto the cedar plank on Sunday.

Our project will be similar to the Garden Totem shown from Garnette Hines's Petalecho Etsy site.

I have always been fascinated with stained glass and its ability to engender emotion. I am particularly taken with the colours and interplay of the transparent and opaque glass.

Discovering fused glass opened up a whole new world for me. I like the combination of the technical skills needed to produce the artistic finished product and the freedom from traditional copper foil or lead lines. I love to experiment with glass as a canvas, brush, and paint to produce the emotion and feel of a painting using glass as a medium.

Ultimately, I would like to have people see glass as not only a functional medium but also a true fine art.

I am a juried member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. As Fractured Glass Studio: Fine and Functional Glass Art, Bob and I exhibit and sell work in galleries and shows around the province. Our studio also explored the world of wholesale, through the Toronto Gift Fair for a number of years and our products have been shipped to the Yukon, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

- Yvonne Kurpjuweit - Creative Adornments

I have been making glass beads for twelve years. I purchased supplies and a book to follow and set out on my own creative journey. After two years of experiments, I took a workshop with Margaret Zintzer-Hunt in Tucson, AZ and Leah Allison at Big Eddy Glassworks in Revelstoke. I hope to take more bead workshops in the future.

I love the discovery process of working with glass. Every time I work on a new bead, I learn something new and exciting. It is always a nice surprise to open the kiln and see how they have turned out. My recent work has focused on making off mandrel pieces and working with silver glass. I have also been experimenting making a few little critters.

Creative Adornments is the name of my jewellery business. I takes part in a couple of sales throughout the year. Since becoming a mother to three girls, I am far less productive at making jewellery.

I make jewellery because I love to do it, not because I have to. I would like to thank my amazing husband Michael for parenting their three wonderful girls when I am on the torch.
